Container Gardening in Pickens County,

Anyone can grow veggies and herbs....whether you live on acres of land or in an urban apartment. Come learn about container gardening. Not only is this a great way to grow a wide variety of plants in a small space, but it will also let you garden year-round.

Container gardening gives you lots of flexibility to be creative with your garden. You can stack containers so you can grow more in a limited space, containers can be outside or indoors, and there is a wide variety of plants that grow really well in containers.

Join us as we explore the world of container gardening. Come get your hands dirty, make new friends, and go home with a new garden.

Participants will be responsible for providing their own containers. We will provide the soil and a limited selection of seeds. Feel free to bring your own seeds if there is something in particular that you'd like to grow.

 

Passive Solar Window Shades at the Sharptop Arts Association in Jasper,
August 26-27th, 9:45 to 1:00ish,
FREE for everyone!

We have a garden space in the Sharptop Arts Association Visionary Garden and we have several requirements for elements that must be included. One of these requirements is to create window shades, so we're making solar shades from reclaimed wood.

What are solar shades? They are awning-like coverings that allow some sun to enter the window. They keep out the hot afternoon sun, but welcome the cooler morning and evening sun. Come build with us!

You'll learn about building with reclaimed materials, tool safety, and basic woodworking.

Knife Sharpening at East Cobb Park in Marietta,

A sharp knife is a very important tool.
Dull knives are dangerous!

Come learn a variety of techniques for sharpening your blades. We will provide a selection of sharpening stones for you to use....porcelain, diamond stones, and more....

Bring your dull knives, whether they're cutlery, woodworking, folding blades, or fixed blades, and you'll take home sharp knives that are much safer and more effective in acomplishing their cutting tasks. (No serrated knives please.)

 

Westward Ho! at the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville,

Journey to the west without leaving the south in this unique program focused on Westward Expansion. From Lewis & Clark and mountain men, to the settlers and ranchers who followed them, discover the rugged individuals who explored and settled the American West. Determine the impact westward expansion had on the lives of the Plains Indians and meet a cast of Western characters including cowboys, railroad workers and Buffalo Soldiers through a variety of hands-on gallery activities.

Introduction to Spoon Carving in Pickens County with Vered,
September 27th, 9:45 to 2:00ish, ages 12 and older only

Learn how to turn a rough piece of wood into a beautiful, usable spoon!

Students will learn how to safely use knives and gouges to make a spoon to take home with them at the end of the program. Spoon-carving is a wonderful introduction to the world or woodworking. Come learn this fun craft and skill.

Advanced Spoon Carving in Pickens County with Vered,
October 6th, 9:45 to 2:00ish,

You must have participated in one of the two Introduction to Spoon Carving classes offered during the 2010-2011 school year or in September 2011.

In the Introduction to Spoon Carving class you made small, fairly simple spoons. In this class, we'll make larger serving spoons! And if you're really comfortable with the carving tools, you can even add some snazzy features.

The Headless Horseman of Silly Hollow
at the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta,

In this comedic version of the classic Washington Irving tale, schoolteacher Ichabod Crane helps the Headless Horseman find a new head and a spookier image. Meanwhile, a jealous Brom Bones tries to run Ichabod out of town as they both vie for the affection of Katrina Van Tassel. In the end the Horseman saves the day and everyone is “happy ever after!”

OMG! Rosemary Newcott, the Sally G. Tomlinson Artistic Director of Theatre for Youth, once again demonstrates her talent for developing new children’s work by staging The Real Tweenagers of Atlanta, an improvisational survival guide for tweenagers. Conceived and directed by Newcott, this new musical created from interviews with 'tweens in our community is part talent show, part pep rally. Young and old, you might just find maybe we’re all a little 'tween after all. ROTFL.

In this fast paced retelling of a folktale favorite, David Stephens of All Hands Productions weaves together classic stories such as “Hansel and Gretel, “Androcles and the Lion,” “The Frog Prince” and “The Three Wishes.” Run, run, run as fast as you can! 'Come explore the Big Trees Forest Preserve in Sandy Springs!

The John Ripley Forbes Big Trees Forest Preserve is a beautiful and unique 30-acre Fulton County Tree, Plant and Wildlife Sanctuary.

The Forest is a remarkable urban forest with hilly topography featuring two creeks and a diverse middle growth forest including specimen white oak trees between 100 and 200 years old. It is designed and managed as a forest education center offering passive recreation walks along 1 1/2 miles of wood mulched walking trails.

Join us as we explore the Preserve, learning about the local history, native plants, water quality, and more!

Kudzu Fencing with Edible Jasper in Jasper, GA,
April 21-22, 2012
FREE for everyone!

Edible Jasper began edibly landscaping Main Street in Jasper, Georgia in 2010. The first garden is thriving, and we're ready two add plants to the second and third. These first gardens are in the parking lot of the Pickens County Progress at the north end of town, and we will slowly be moving south down Main Street. Visit their website for photos and descriptions.

Jasper Art Fest is during the weekend of April 21-22 and the Pickens Arts and Cultural Alliance will be making a wall hanging from kudzu. Edible Jasper will start its spring gardening season by making fences for the garden spaces from kudzu! The first garden already has a kudzu fence and it looks terrific! Photos will be posted soon.

So when you're in Jasper at Art Fest, come by Edible Jasper's garden at the north end of Main Street and help weave new kudzu fences.

Edible Jasper is a collaborative project sponsored by Sustainable Pickens, Educational and Homeschool Excursions, the Pickens County Progress, the Mountain Conservation Trust of Georgia.

 

Rivercane Rendezvous in LaFayette, GA,
April 22-29, 2012

'Rivercane Rendezvous is a week-long family-style camp. They offer morning and afternoon classes for all ages...kids to adults. You can stay for the week or come for a day or two.

Rendezvous began more than 25 years ago to preserve and promote indigenous primitive skills like making white oak baskets, foraging for wild foods, starting fire by friction and tanning deer skins. Today, these courses are still taught, but so much more has been added! More than 30 instructors come to share their skills. Visit primitiveskills.org for more information.

Rivercane is hosted by Earthskills Rendezvous, Inc. It is not a program sponsored by Educational Excursions, but we support it and encourage you to attend. CDC Tour in Atlanta,
May 21st, 11:00 to 1:00ish,

Join us for this exciting visit to the CDC ~ the Center for Disease Control

During the field trip, students will learn about CDC’s history, CDC’s current work in preventing disease and promoting health, and detailed information about various infectious diseases. Upon arrival to the David J. Sencer CDC Museum, the group will be greeted and oriented to CDC on the Global Symphony platform. The Global Symphony is a media installation featuring four, three–minute stories that describe in depth CDC′s contributions to the elimination of polio, the investigation of Legionnaire′s disease, the battle to stem the rise of obesity in the United States, and the study of how humans, animals, and the environment interact in the spread of Ebola. Following the orientation, students will be divided into two smaller groups. One group will tour the exhibit area while the other group watches a video about CDC. Approximately 40 minutes later the groups will trade places.

Tours include the current temporary exhibit and CDC Museum’s permanent History of CDC exhibit. For information on the current temporary exhibit, click here. Through the context of the history of CDC exhibit, students will learn about infectious and chronic diseases studied at CDC, the bacteria, viruses and risk behaviors that cause diseases, and prevention methods like immunization and healthy lifestyles.

Following the guided tour and video presentation, students will have the opportunity to try on a Biosafety Level 4 lab suit and explore the exhibit area independently.
