Programs 2007-2008Baskets with Alice Craig in Pickens County, Join Alice Craig as she teaches us how to make baskets from a variety of materials. She will provide Day Lillies, Yucca, Honeysuckle, and more. We will learn how to mold these materials into beautiful baskets that you can take home! This class is best appropriate for kids aged 8 and older. Nature Awareness Skills with Steven "Snowbear" Taylor in Pickens County, September 18th, 2007, 10:00 to 5:00ish, $45.00 per participant includes lunch! ($40.00 if paid by September 4th) $20.00 for parents ; $30.00 for members!! For kids aged 7 to 11 Steven "Snowbear" Taylor has been an environmental educator for more than 30 years. He has embarked upon a life-long pursuit of knowledge with an emphasis in living skills, medicinal and edible plants, utilitarian uses of plants, and world rhythms. He has studied with elders from the Cherokee, Creek, Lakota, Seminole, and Ojibway tribes. (Snowbear is of anglo descent, but has been honored with the opportunity to learn from the experience and knowledge of these Native American tribes.) He has been involved with the founding of several environmental education organizations in the Southeast, including Earthskills Rendezvous. Join us for this exciting outdoor adventure for the younger kids. The program will begin with a series of awareness games and challenges. As the day progresses, the group will shift from developing these skills to actually using them in the forest. Snowbear will help the kids to slow down and absorb their surroundings. They will learn about the plants they encounter, as well as anything else that they come across during this adventure. To Kill a Mockingbird at the Theatrical Outfit in Atlanta, Founded in 1976, Theatrical Outfit is dedicated to Atlanta-based artists of national caliber. We focus on the work of Southern writers and composers to tell the stories we know best. The themes of spirituality, community and racial understanding are particularly resonant in our culture, and we are committed to giving them dramatic voice in the heart of downtown Atlanta. Widely considered the greatest book of the twentieth century, this Pulitzer Prize winning novel has been adapted for the stage by Christopher Sergel and will begin Theatrical Outfit’s thirty-first season featuring Executive Artistic Director Tom Key in the role of Atticus Finch. Homeschooler Tendal Mann is cast as Dill! It promises to be a wonderful professional production with a top notch cast including popular regional actors Tom Key as Atticus and Carolyn Cook (homeschooling mom) as the adult Jean Louise/Scout and another homeschooling child as young Scout. Special Bonus for To Kill a Mockingbird! After our matinee performance next Sat., some of the cast and crew members will be staying after for a question and answer session with our group. We already know that the award-winning actor who plays Atticus, Artistic Director Tom Key, wil be staying, as well as homeschooled Tendal Mann, who plays Dill and the Stage Manager, Wendy Palmer. We also know there's a good chance that others will be joining them. Don't miss this fantastic performance (they've had full houses and standing ovations all this preview week) and great educational opportunity. Many performances have already sold-out for the run.
Winnie-the-Pooh at the Center for Puppetry Arts, These gentle, timeless tales of simple friendship are lovingly told in this heartwarming Center favorite. There are no villains here, just friends helping friends as Eeyore loses his tail, Piglet looks for a Heffalump and Pooh takes a balloon ride through the sky in this straightforward re-telling of the children’s classic. Hunny, anyone?
Cordage with Alice Craig in Pickens County, You probably don't give much thought to the shoelaces you use every day, or the line you use while fishing, or even the fibers that are used in the shirt you're wearing. There is a common thread tying these materials together...they all originated from the same concept of making coradge from plant fibers. Alice Craig joins us again for this exciting program. Come, learn how to make cordage from a variety of materials, and I pormise, you'll always view rope, or even a piece of string with a completely different level of respect! This class is best appropriate for kids aged 8 and older.
Halloween Gourd Crafts with Scott Jones near the northern intersection of I-285 and I-85, A Georgia native, Scott has made a life-long study of natural and cultural history, and the interconnectedness of the two. This interest in natural science and human technology merged easily with his archaeological training, and in 1987 he began to apply his expertise full-time to the study of Stone-Age skills, ancient technologies and their relation to our lives today. Scott is the President of the Society of Primitive Technology (based in Rexburg, ID), and is a member of the Georgia Council of Professional Archaeologists, the Society for Georgia Archaeology and is a life member of the Southeastern Archaeological Conference. Since this program is on the day before Halloween, students will have several options on how to transform their gourd. They may make a mask, a permanent primitive jack-o-lantern, or they may make any number of other projects such as bowls, instruments, or containers with lids. It's up to them, and they get to take it home!
Bamboo Crafts with Buck Windsor in Dawsonville, Buck Windsor is a master when it comes to stone-age cooking and transforming bamboo into a variety of usable tools. He is one of the founders of the 'Ways of the Ancestors Primitive Skills Program' and is a regular instructor at Earthskills Rendezvous, the Stone Mountain Pow-Wow, and more. Come learn from this skilled and entertaining craftman. He will begin the program with a discussion focusing on food, clothing, and shelter, the three main ingredients for survival. The prgram will then continue in to a lesson on the usefulness of a renewable resource like bamboo. Each participant will have the opportunity to make a cup and/or instrument to take home with them!

Buckskin Pouches with Alice Craig in Pickens County, Buckskin is one of our oldest and most durable materials for clothing, tools, and more. This class will teach you the fundamentals of working with buckskin, from making a pattern to using an awl. An awl, you ask? Well, if you don't know what an awl is, you should come join us and you'll learn! Alice Craig, our instructor for the day, is an experienced hide tanner. She will explain the importance and significance of animal hides throughout our history, she'll detail the complicated process of how to tan a hide, and then we'll get to create our own pouches to take home. Perfect for holiday gifts! This class is best appropriate for kids aged 8 and older.
Duke Ellington's Cat at the Center for Puppetry Arts, This lyrical look at the life and times of one of America’s jazz icons is set right in the middle of a career that spanned from the Roaring Twenties through the Civil Rights Movement. Going on the road with the great Duke Ellington is one cool cat. From the early days in the pool halls to the concert halls performing before crowned heads, this feisty feline has been there at Duke’s side, sometimes even sitting in with the band. But, not everything is in rhythm on the day that Duke is to play a suite in honor of the Queen of England and the score has been stolen! Will his cat find the music and get it to the Duke in time? This is a great introduction to jazz and American History for all ages.

He is a member of Sapien, a Grammy nominated world music group. He has also been involved with the founding of several environmental education organizations in the Southeast, including Earthskills Rendezvous. Join us for this fun day with Snowbear as he introduces us to African song and rhythm. You'll learn songs and drum rhythms of the Yoruba tribe in what is now Nigeria. Cinderella Della Circus, Cinderella is head over heels but not in love…yet. She is a high-flying circus artiste working for a cruel Ringmaster and her jealous daughters who won’t let Cinderella perform her incredible acrobatic maneuvers. Instead, she must cook and clean for them. But this doesn’t stop her from practicing in the moonlight where her gentle spirit shines. The circus is commanded to perform at the Handsome Prince’s Ball. Cinderella is forbidden to attend, but with the aid of her “Fairy Godmother” – P.T. Barnum – she transforms her act into pure beauty for all to enjoy. The Handsome Prince is smitten with her, but the “magic” ends at midnight, and the rest is as you know except…Cinderella discovers it isn’t the Handsome Prince she loves but someone close to her who has a secret of his own.
Tour and Propagation class at Ramblewood Gardens in Jasper, Join us for this exciting Earth Day event! We'll visit Ramblewood Gardens and hang out with Herbalist Kathy Bell. She will give us an tour of her herb and perennial nursery including a tree walk, plant identification, and more. And then...she'll give us a lesson on propagation, like starting plants from seeds, cuttings and division. You will be able to take home what you started and grow them in your garden or in a container this Spring! So, bring seeds for your favorite annual veggies, flowers, or other plants and get ready for this exciting program! Plastic pots for starting your seeds will be available, but I suggest looking around the house to find interesting containers...especially is you're planning on leaving your new plants in pots. (Just make sure they have adequate drainage!) We look forward to seeing you on Earth Day!
Hide Tanning with Christina Gordon at Whitestone Farm in Pickens, Christina Gordon will lead this intensive program teaching you how to tan (turning an animal skin into a usable piece of leather) a hide, from start to finish. Come to Whitestone Farm for this exciting program, and go home with a beautiful new tanned buckskin. This is a three day program and very labor intensive. Christina will provide your hide and all the necessary tools. Get ready to get messy!

Whitestone Farm Tour and Project Day in Pickens, Come tour a local organic CSA (Community Supported Agriculture). You'll get a walking tour of the farm...learning about the different herbs, vegetables, and fruit trees. Check out the goats, chickens, and more! Stay for the second part of the program for a delicious lunch provided by the farm. And then after we stuff our bellies, we'll work on whatever project they need help with. (mulching...canning...we'll just have to wait to see what's going on during that part of the season!) Come learn a bit about what it takes to run an organic farm! |
